Depakote (Divalproex Sodium) – Patient Education

Why am I taking this medication?

Depakote is used to help stabilize mood, prevent seizures, or prevent migraines. It works best when taken consistently every day.

How should I take it?
 

• Take exactly as prescribed.

• You may take it with food if it upsets your stomach.

• Do not stop taking Depakote suddenly unless your provider tells you to. Stopping it abruptly can be dangerous and may increase your risk of seizures or mood worsening.

• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose—do not double up.

Common side effects

These side effects are common and often improve over time:

• Drowsiness or fatigue

• Dizziness

• Nausea or upset stomach

• Tremor (shaky hands)

• Increased appetite or weight gain

• Hair thinning (usually temporary)

Until you know how Depakote affects you, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery.

Important safety information
 

Call your healthcare provider right away if you develop:
 

• Severe stomach pain, persistent nausea, or vomiting

• Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

• Dark urine

• Unusual bruising or bleeding

• Fever, sore throat, or severe weakness

• Swelling of the face

• Confusion, excessive sleepiness, or changes in alertness

• Worsening seizures (if treated for seizures)

Mood changes
 

Like many medications that affect the brain, Depakote may rarely increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or unusual mood or behavior changes. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you or your family notice:
 

• New or worsening depression or anxiety

• Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

• Panic attacks

• Extreme irritability or aggression

• Unusual excitement, restlessness, or impulsive behavior

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Depakote can cause serious birth defects and developmental problems if taken during pregnancy.
 

• Tell your provider immediately if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant.

• Use effective birth control while taking Depakote if pregnancy is possible.

• Talk with your provider before breastfeeding.

Other important reminders

• Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacy before starting Depakote.

• Avoid alcohol unless your provider says it is safe.

• Tell every healthcare provider, dentist, or surgeon that you take Depakote before any procedure or new medication is started.

• Keep all scheduled appointments and lab work. Regular blood tests help monitor your liver, blood counts, and medication levels to keep treatment safe.

• Carry a current medication list or medical identification stating that you take Depakote, especially if you have a seizure disorder.
